7/22: Braves Minor League Recap

Gwinnett 5, Scranton/WB 2
Cristhian Martinez: 6.2 IP, 4 H, R, 6 K
Craig Kimbrel: 1 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 2 K
Wes Timmons: 3-5, HR, 2 RBI
Freddie Freeman: 3-5

Martinez pitched a great game for Gwinnett, allowing three singles and a double along with an unearned run. He didn’t walk any and struck out six. Naturally, the lone double was off the bat of Jesus Montero. The Braves are glad to be leaving him. Gwinnett’s 2-5 hitters combined for 12 hits and three RBIs.

Tennessee 5, Mississippi 3
Chris Resop: 2.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, K
Erik Cordier: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Tim Collins: 1 IP, BB, 2 K
Tyler Pastornicky: 2-4, RBI, BB
Mauro Gomez: 2-2, 2 BB

Resop could not match his first rehab start when he pitched two shutout innings. He was knocked around for two runs in two-plus innings on five hits, including two doubles. Cordier was equally knocked around, which is rare as of late. He also struggled with control, which isn’t as rare. The two new guys did well, as Collins now has seven strikeouts in four innings for Mississippi, and Pastornicky picked up two more hits and an RBI. Willie Cabrera and Donell Linares added an RBI each.

Myrtle Beach 4, Frederick 1
Julio Teheran: 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 9 K
Osman Marval: 2-5, 2B, RBI
Jordan Kreke: 1-4, 2B, RBI
Dan Nelson: 1-4, 2B, RBI

That darn Teheran was at it again. He took a perfect game into the fifth before giving up a single. His lone run allowed came in the sixth when he hit a batter, who was bunted to second and scored on a single. He gave up one more single in the seventh but that was it. Teheran didn’t walk any over his seven innings and the opposition reached third base only once when they eventually scored. It’s a definite improvement over his past few outings but it’s not like anybody was worrying anyway.

Lexington 3, Rome 2
Caleb Brewer: 3 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg: 1-4, HR, RBI

Brewer was wild in three innings of work. He put two on in the first on a single and walk and threw a wild pitch. He gave up a double, single, walk, and threw another wild pitch that scored a run in the second. He gave up a walk, triple, and two singles and allowed a third run in the third. Not exactly efficient, and Brewer isn’t doing much to get excited about these days. After bragging on Rome’s offense, they sputtered tonight. RSF provided one run on a homer and Jake Hanson drove in the other. Edward Salcedo picked up a second triple in as many days and walked once. Christian Bethancourt recorded a double but struck out three times.

Danville 4, Pulaski 1
Ryan Weber: 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 6 K
Evan Gattis: 3-4, 2 RBI
Andrelton Simmons: 2-4, 2B

Weber responded from a seven-run outing last time out by almost matching Teheran’s performance, lowering his ERA to 2.86. I know it doesn’t mean much considering he’s way too old for the league, but Gattis continues to swing a hot bat and now has at least one RBI in six of his past seven games. He’s 7-9 with five RBIs in his last two games.

GCL Braves 7, GCL Phillies 4
Eduardo Castillo: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 K
Matt Lipka: 3-4, 2B, HR, RBI
Cody Johnson: 1-5, HR, 2 RBI
Daniel Falcon: 2-4, RBI

Castillo recorded a quality start in his second outing with the GCL Braves. Lipka is on fire right now, picking up an RBI in three straight games and raising his average to .347. He also stole two more bases to raise his total to 12, and he has two steals in each of the past three games. It doesn’t mean as much when the team steals at will though, because Falcon stole three and Victor Cadette stole two. Johnson hit a homer and struck out twice. He would do that on a regular basis at any level, I believe.

Notes:
This tidbit came across Twitter via Bill Shanks while I was writing this recap:

"Braves will send Brandon Beachy to Triple-A Gwinnett and Julio Teheran to Double-A Mississippi on Friday."

This is a major achievement for both. Considering he wasn’t drafted, to see Beachy move up like he is is phenomenal. And to see Teheran reach AA in his first full season of pro ball is amazing. It’s just another example of what we have in Teheran.

Talking Chop adds that Randall Delgado will be joining Teheran at AA. Huge.
