Who Are The Three Braves Prospects Suspended For Drugs?
Three prospects in the Atlanta Braves farm system have been suspended 50 games after they each tested positive for amphetamine.
Albaro “Yoel” Campusano, Geraldo Rodriguez and Amadeo Zazueta played with Class-A Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League, according to the AJC. But who are these guys and were they the type of prospect that Jordan Schafer was when he was suspended?
Geraldo Rodriguez, according to chop-n-change, was a C-rated infielder in the farm system behind Freddie Freeman, who is the future Braves first baseman. Although he has shown power, he apparently strikes out a lot and does not show much patience at the plate.
He has 12 home runs for Myrtle Beach and his average is right around what Troy Glaus’s is at. In each of his last three years his slugging percentage has been high, and it is currently .500.
Albarao Campusano was already struggling this year. I wouldn’t exactly call this kid a prospect considering he hasn’t shown strength in any one category and his numbers aren’t particular good in any department. He has had two years hitting for a decent average and he has some speed with the ability to play any infield position left of first base. But the kid hasn’t shown he is a star. Not sure he was ever going to see the big leagues.
Amadeo Zazueta is another guy like Campusano who has statistics that don’t jump out and grab your attention. No power, no RBIs, not a base stealer and only one season with a decent average. This second and third baseman wasn’t on the verge of hitting the majors. He was on a thin thread tight-rope walking to stay in the Braves A affiliate.
These suspensions only embarrass these young players and will have little effect on the Braves organization because none really appeared to have star status.
When Jordan Schafer was suspended two years ago, it did tarnish the image of a farm system that has produced some terrific players over the past three decades.
