After a successful rehab start for AAA Gwinnett on Thursday night, Braves catcher Brian McCann will rejoin the Atlanta lineup tonight for the first game of a three-game set with the National League East division-rival Philadelphia Phillies.
McCann was placed on the disabled-list on April 25 after failing to overcome blurred vision in his left eye. The 25-year old, who underwent Lasik surgery two years ago, had been experiencing problems since the start of the season and has used everything from contact lenses to eye drops in an attempt to remedy the problem.
Last week, McCann rehabbed at A Myrtle Beach and still had problems seeing the ball. That’s when team doctors decided that wearing glasses would be the best solution.
"“I’m pretty sure I’ll be in the starting lineup, ready to go,” McCann told MLB.com. “I’m excited to get back and join the team. I think everything is going to go great.”"
He will now be wearing special prescription Oakley sports glasses that allow for both better vision and comfort so he can wear them underneath his catcher’s mask.
In his only game wearing the new shades, McCann hit and RBI double in his first Gwinnett at-bat in the first inning against Syracuse. In three other at-bats, he intentionally walked, grounded out sharply and lined out to right field.
