McCann Sporting New Glasses With Hope Of Solving Blurred Vision

In a last ditch attempt to correct blurred vision in his left eye without having to undergo surgery, Brian McCann will start wearing custom-made glasses for the first time in his life on a ball field this coming week.

In the past two weeks, the Atlanta Braves catcher, who is currently on the 15-day disabled list, has tried several  pairs of contact lenses to no avail . He has also met with three separate eye specialists that have offered eye ointments and drops which have failed to improve his vision.

"“The contacts didn’t work,” McCann told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “(The blurred vision) has bothered me every at-bat.”"

McCann played in two rehab games earlier this week at AA Myrtle Beach, going a combined 1-for-6. He told the AJC that he felt fine only for a short time and that the problem returned even with the use of eye drops.

"“I hate being on the DL,” he told the AJC. “It feels like I’m not here. It’s so early in the season, and not playing. … This is probably the toughest thing I’ve had to go through in a long time. I hate it for the team that I can’t play.”"

McCann will test out his new Oakey sports glasses on Monday in a AAA start at Gwinnett. The new shades are designed so he can use them under his catcher’s mask without any interference.

If all goes well, McCann is elgible to return to the Braves lineup on May 8 for a weekend series with the Philadelphia Phillies.

However, if the problem persists, the last option for McCann, who is hitting just .195 on the season with two home runs and seven RBIs, would be Lasik surgery which would require him to miss a lengthy amount of time.
