Atlanta Braves Nick Markakis – Defense

After reviewing Nick’s numbers at the plate, let’s take a look at Nick’s defensive value for this team. Is he providing any value defensively?

Nick has spent 129.2 innings in the outfield this season. While he hasn’t committed any errors this season, that’s probably because he’s struggling to get to a lot of balls in the outfield.

Overall, his UZR is -0.5, UZR/150 is -9.6, and he has -2 DRS in 2020. Essentially, Markakis hasn’t been good defensively in 2020.

The majority of his time has been spent in right field this year, where he sports a -0.8 UZR, -19.3 UZR/150, and has a -2 DRS. He’s not getting to balls that average defensive outfielders would get too and he’s arguably hurting the Braves when he plays right field.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that he’s been solid in left field this year. In 25.2 innings (small sample size), he has a 0.3 UZR and a 43.3 UZR/150. Maybe a permanent move to left field could be beneficial for Markakis and the Braves?
