While no one will be mathematically out of the race going into September, I think it will come down to the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.

And those two teams with face each other seven times in September to decide who will win the NL East in 2020.

September (25 games — Record: 16-9)

The Braves finish a three-game set in Boston to start the month splitting the final two games of that series.

And then they have a big homestand in which they host the Nationals and Marlins for three games apiece. Both of those need to be series wins.

But then comes possibly the most important series of the year as the Braves travel to Washington for four games — the last time the two teams will meet in 2020.

If things have gone the way I’ve predicted in this article, then the Braves just need to win two games.

However, if the Braves find themselves trailing Washington at this point it will be imperative they win the series.

This is where Atlanta should be able to either pick up a lot of ground or extend their lead with three against Baltimore, three against the Mets, four against the Marlins, and three against the Red Sox.

You’d have to figure that all of those teams are likely out of the playoff hunt at that point. And in such a weird season, I really doubt those teams are going to risk pushing their starting pitchers.

It would not be surprising at all to see the Braves win at least nine games in that stretch to end the season.

Final Record: 40-20

That record is highly optimistic and I would be really surprised if any team in the East reaches 40 wins.

More likely it will take around 35-38 wins to take the division.

But I do love the Braves’ chances with the way their schedule ends. If they just hover above .500 through the first month of the season then they have a great chance to pull away at the end.
