Nationals

Josh Donaldson is most definitely a fallback option for the Washington Nationals if they are not able to re-sign Anthony Rendon.

The Nationals will first try to re-sign their star third baseman who just helped them win their first-ever World Series, but if they can’t land him they could easily pivot and get Donaldson for less than half of what it would cost them to sign Rendon.

I still feel like the Nationals are going to give Rendon whatever he wants. Sometimes teams get nostalgic after winning a World Series, understandably, and want to reward the players who got them there.

Plus, the Nationals have one of the largest payrolls in baseball and are coming off a World Series, they’re going to have plenty of money to spend.

The question for them is whether or not they can sign Rendon and Stephen Strasburg. They may only be able to get one of them, and I think they go harder after Rendon.

But again, if they feel the price tag gets too high for Rendon and there is a team out there more aggressive for him, then I think their odds of signing Donaldson go up significantly.

However, I just don’t see too many other teams that would be willing to give Rendon what the Nationals will likely offer him.
