Kris Bryant

Obviously the Atlanta Braves are going to try and re-sign Josh Donaldson, and I think that’s what most fans want, too.

But if JD does sign elsewhere, I think the Braves could look to the Chicago Cubs and Kris Bryant as plan B.

As Michael says, I think the deal only makes sense if Bryant loses his grievance and has two years of control left.

And I know a lot of fans use baseballtradevalues.com’s trade simulator as a tool to put trades together, but I hardly ever find it to be realistic.

If Bryant has two years of control left, that doesn’t seem nearly enough for a former MVP.

I know he’s coming off a somewhat disappointing season, but according to FanGraphs, he was just as good as Donaldson in terms of WAR. JD finished with a WAR of 4.9 and Bryant was right behind him at 4.8.

I think that’s mainly because Bryant hit .282 compared to .259 for JD. But JD was also much better defensively with a Def WAR of 4.5 compared to -4.1 for Bryant.

But in Bryant’s defense, the Cubs moved him all over the place. I think if he sticks at third he can be a solid defender, and I think his offensive numbers could go back to an MVP level as well.

I say all that to say, Bryse Wilson and Freddy Tarnok would not be a good enough package.

The Atlanta Braves would probably have to trade Austin Riley and Bryse Wilson. Again, that’s assuming two more years of control for Bryant.

If he does somehow win his grievance and only has one year of control left, then maybe you get him at a cheaper price.
