Trevor Story, German Marquez, and Trey Mancini

This one is way out of the box thinking, but I like the idea so I wanted to include it here.

Stay with us for a minute, but what Josh Ebbs is proposing here is that the Atlanta Braves trade for Trevor Story and German Marquez from the Colorado Rockies, and then they trade Dansby Swanson to the Baltimore Orioles for Trey Mancini.

In theory here, you’re making an upgrade at shortstop, adding a middle of the rotation starter, and upgrading the outfield.

While Swanson is probably my favorite player on the Atlanta Braves, the idea of having Story’s big bat in the lineup has me at least intrigued.

Story has been an All-Star the past two seasons hitting 37 and 35 home runs with averages of .291 and .294.

Of course, you always worry how much Coors Field has an effect on Rockies’ hitters. And Story’s splits would tell you he’s a much better hitter at home.

He’s hit 79 home runs at home compared to just 44 on the road in a similar number of at-bats. His average also goes from .301 at home to .250 on the road.

Story is arbitration-eligible for two more seasons before becoming a free agent.

Marquez has three years of control left and is a very attractive arm. Like with Rockies hitters, you have to check the splits for pitchers as well.

The 24-year-old righty has a 5.01 ERA in Coors Field and a 3.72 ERA on the road.

And we’ve already talked about what a great fit Mancini would be.

Let’s focus on the package for Story and Marquez. Pache or Waters would definitely have to headline this deal, and I think Wright is a solid secondary prospect.

But with five years of control between the two Rockies players, and I’m not sure what the plan is going forward for the Rockies, I still think it would take more to get this deal done.

You may have to replace Wright with Muller or Ian Anderson, and I’m not willing to do that.

And Swanson going to the Orioles doesn’t make much sense.
