Atlanta Braves: 3 Takeaway’s from Monday’s bashing of Pirates and Scuffle
By James Kunkle
3. What to do about Sean Newcomb?
Perhaps Sean Newcomb could fill that role against the Phillies in place of Gausman this weekend? However, I would prefer to leave Newcomb alone right now and let him continue to pitch out of the bullpen.

He has been a completely different pitcher since being recalled from Gwinnett. He was also spectacular Monday evening and shut down the Pirates offense and allowed the offense to gain a big cushion.
The win Monday was actually the first decision of any kind this year for Newcomb. He pitched 4.2 innings of 1-hit ball, while striking out 6 and walking none.
In fact, he has done a 180 on walks since being recalled. He has only issued 2 walks in 19 innings in his time out of the pen. Also in those 19 innings, he has only allowed 3 earned runs.
I don’t know if the long term goal is to get Sean Newcomb back into the rotation. I think he can still succeed in either role, but if the plan is to keep him in the pen, it looks like he will certainly be a target there as well for the Braves.
The same two teams will meet Tuesday night in a pitching rematch from last Thursday as Mike Foltynewicz and Chris Archer will meet again. Hopefully the Braves can now get into first place all by themselves.
