Atlanta Braves free agent profile: Adam Ottavino
Rockies time
Ottavino moved to the bullpen with the Rockies, and he spent just 13 games in AAA before moving up to the big league club. He ended up pitching 53 games at the major league level, tossing 79 innings, posting a 4.56 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and a 34/81 BB/K ratio.
He took another step forward in 2013, posting a 2.64 ERA over 51 games and 78 1/3 innings, with a 1.33 WHIP and a 31/78 BB/K ratio. He followed that with a more relief-focused season in 2014, making 75 appearances with only 65 innings, posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 16/70 BB/K ratio.
Ottavino was injured early in 2015 and ended up needing Tommy John surgery. Incredibly, he’d pitched 10 games and 10 1/3 innings in 2015 before the injury without allowing a run, striking out 13.
Ottavino returned in 2016 for 34 games, throwing 27 innings, posting a 2.67 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and a 7/35 BB/K ratio.
The recovery from Tommy John can often lead to struggles with control, and those hit Ottavino hard in 2017, as he made 63 appearances, throwing 63 1/3 innings, with a 5.06 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and a 39/63 BB/K ratio.
Ottavino seemed 100% in 2018 and produced a big season, appearing in 75 games, tossing 77 2/3 innings, with a 2.43 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and a 36/112 BB/K ratio.
