Braves rumors: 15 potential “Cheap” Free Agents for the Braves
By James Kunkle
Nick Hundley
Nick Hundley would be a good signing if only the Braves were committed to letting Tyler Flowers be the everyday backstop, or at least 2 out of 3 days at least. The bad thing about this would be Flowers and Hundley share many of the same attributes, as they both hit lefties at a much better clip.
Hundley’s catching stats have decreased with his age has most catchers experience, but again, we are talking about a backup role here.
Jordy Mercer
Jordy Mercer could serve in the role some people want Johan Camargo to serve, and that is a backup at every position and in case of emergency. A quick look at Mercer’s career and you will see that if nothing else, he has been consistent throughout it.
Like most Right handed hitters, Mercer hits southpaws better than he does Right handers. In the 2018 season, Mercer hit a respectable .286 against lefties. Also, Mercer is nothing great in the field, but he shouldn’t bog it down as well.
Jerry Blevins
Jerry Blevins at this point is probably only going to come in during certain situations and not pitch whole innings. He did not have a good year last year in Queens, but maybe a team like the Braves could take a chance and rectify his stuff?
The puzzling thing to me is in 2 of the last 3 years, Blevins has had better luck against Right handers than left handers. Blevins numbers also inflated last year due to him giving up a fair shore of long balls as he gave them up at a 1.27/9 Rate. If he could get back to his early Met days ways, he could be a nice bargain piece for the Braves to consider.
