Cost

The big issue for the Atlanta Braves in any Braves rumors this offseason will be the cost of the player, whether it is cost in contract or in players for a trade.

Patrick Corbin will be very attracted to the New York market being from northern New York originally. He is going to be heavily pursued by the Yankees, even after they’ve acquired James Paxton, which means he’s certainly not going to come at any discount.

More from Tomahawk Take

MLBTR has Patrick Corbin ranked as the #3 free agent this offseason and projected to sign with the Yankees for a 6-year, $129 million contract. If the negotiations go to six years, it’s quite likely that the Braves will be out, however, a $21.5 million annual value could be something palatable for the Braves.

A deal that would likely make sense for the Braves would likely be something more like 4 years, $88 million in order to be competitive, perhaps bumping up even to 4/$90M if needed to compete with longer-term offers. The length of offer could end up being enough to sway Corbin, however.

Should the Braves do it

In a word, in my opinion, no. Corbin has had one season performing at this level, and investing this heavily in him with the chance that he could quickly be that guy from 2017 or even 2016 throughout the rest of the deal. That would hurt the Braves flexibility in building a roster.

Next. Minor league FAs the Braves should pursue. dark

There will likely be Braves rumors about starting pitchers this offseason, but most likely the contract for Patrick Corbin will end up outside of the Atlanta Braves price range.
