How Corbin ranks

The 2018 season was an excellent one for Corbin. At 29 on opening day, Corbin’s young and left-handed, so the upside is fairly high. Let’s look at where he ranked in some key metrics in 2018 among qualified pitchers.

  • fWAR (6.3): 4th
  • Innings (200): 12th (tied)
  • ERA (3.15): 15th
  • FIP (2.47): 3rd
  • K/9 (11.07): 6th
  • K% (30.8): 7th
  • BB/9 (2.16): 13th
  • BB% (6): 17th
  • K-BB% (24.8): 5th
  • HR/9 (0.68): 3rd
  • Ground ball % (48.5): 9th
  • Hard hit % (41.7): 2nd highest
  • Avg. FB velo (90.8): 43rd
  • Slider usage (41.3%): 2nd
  • Slider value (27): 1st
  • Slider value per 100 thrown (2.08): 8th
  • Swing % outside zone (38): 1st
  • Contact % outside zone (52.6): 6th
  • Contact % inside zone (82.7): 10th
  • Swinging strike (15.6%): 2nd

It truly was an elite season for Corbin, in large part built on the effectiveness of his slider. He also debuted a curve that gives a very similar velocity look to his slider, but gives a different break, and allows the slider to play up.

Overall, the biggest concerns are that Corbin had the lowest fastball velocity of his career in 2018, the highest slider usage of his career, and the highest hard-hit rate of his career.

So what could Corbin cost?
