4. Alex Colome, Mariners

The Rays traded Alex Colome (along with Denard Span) to the Mariners last May where Colome moved to a set-up man, after thriving as the Rays’ closer since 2016.

In his 21.2 innings with Tampa Bay, Colome had an ERA of 4.15 and gave up 10 H/9.  With the Mariners, those numbers lowered to 2.53 and 6.8 H/9 in 46.1innings as the bridge to Edwin Diaz (more on him later).

Colome is only one year removed from a 47-save season with the Rays. In fact, in 2016 and 2017, he saved 84 games for Tampa Bay, with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.

In 2016 alone, he struck out 71 batters in 56.1 innings for a K/9 of 11.3.

Colome is signed through 2020 and is in his second year of arbitration, where he is projected to earn a salary of 7.3 million, which is fairly steep considering my opening comments on bullpen salaries.

But an Atlanta Braves backend of Minter-Vizcaino-Colome would be fairly formidable and the price to acquire Colome should not be much, considering his projected salary and Seattle’s willingness to trim some fat from its budget.

A lottery-ticket type prospect or two, perhaps?
