Atlanta Braves – FanSided Simulated GM meeting
By Fred Owens
Andrew Cabezas
I chose Cabezas as the simulated arm to help fill our shortage of pitchers at the backend of the farm system.
The Twins took him in the 18th round of this year’s draft and he made 11 appearances – nine starts – in rookie ball, throwing 46 innings and striking out 44 while walking 14 and posting a 2.74 ERA and 0.957 WHIP.
Baseball America’s draft report (subscription required for the details) called him a “well-regarded but undersized pitcher with three good pitches when he left high school,
Three years of pitching for the Miami Hurricanes found him looking about the way he did then. He’s still a slim 6-foot, 180-pounds which is likely why he dropped to the 18th round.

A reliever for the Hurricanes in 2017 – 2.15 ERA, 80 Ks, 23 walks – the Canes moved him to the rotation for 2018 He continued to pitch well but as one would expect his K rate dropped as a starter; he only struck out 79 in 75 innings, a shame that huh?
He throws a low 90s heater with what BA called “exceptional late life” and mixes his slider for strikeouts. He started this year and he may do that for a while but he could well be a late-inning reliever in the majors.
That’s a first-morning simulation wrap
I know Rosario’s name didn’t fly off everyone’s lips as a target but when I dug into the data, I found he checked al the right squares. He’s not a prototypical cleanup hitter, but he’ll be a threat there or in the five-hole should we acquire someone else during the simulation.
I’m still searching for a catcher and more relief help as well as that elusive veteran starter.
Of note: When the Indians representative completed a simulated trade for Carlos Carrasco, Corey Kluber vanished from trade talks.
Talks continue, and I’m sure more news will arise. When it does I’ll let you know here on the Take.
