Pitchers’ Progress

Pitchers Q1: Number of starters with double-digit wins (3 in 2017)?

Pitchers Q2: Relievers ERA (was 4.58 in 2017; 5th worst – MLB range was 2.89 to 5.63):

  • Before Monday’s game:  4.20 ERA
  • Hopefully, this is continuing to trend downward after a rough start to 2018
  • Atlanta is still 19th in the majors, though a perfect Monday evening could improve things (Rangers: 4.16).
  • Of note:  only 4 NL clubs have a worse bullpen ERA (Cards, Mets, Rockies, Marlins)

Pitchers Q3: Starting pitchers strikeout-to-walk ratio (was 2.11 in 2017; majors’ range was 1.74 to 4.15; highest numbers mean fewer BB’s):

  • Braves’ K-per-9 rate:  8.56
  • BB-per-9 rate: 3.56
  • Current rate:  an improved 2.40.

Pitchers Q4: How many starting pitchers will the Braves use in 2018 (11 in 2017):

  • Let’s see… what time is it?  Has is changed again already?
  • Bryse Wilson became the thirteenth this year.
  • The list:  Folty, Newk, Sanchez, Soroka, Fried, Gausman, Wisler, McCarthy, Teheran, Toussaint, Gohara, Allard, and Wilson.
  • Unless something drastic happens, the only other possible add-on to that list I could imagine would be Kyle Wright.

Pitchers Q5: Number of combined innings in 2018: Teheran, Folty, Newcomb:

  • So far, this trio has, in fact, been the workhorses of the Braves’ ever-widening stable of starters.
  • 139 (Folty), 135 (Newcomb), and 133.2 (Teheran)
  • That adds up to 407.2 innings.
  • They are on pace for 532 innings… not a bad total.
  • Each has exactly 24 starts… 72 total

So that’s the run-down… if you’ve been keeping track, you’d have to argue that is nearly every aspect of these stats, the Braves have improved.

It’s that kind of across-the-board performance that has put this team in the position they currently occupy:  first place.
