Hitter of the week: With the DSL season wrapping up with this weekend’s action, that means the season is over for all the Braves players there. One guy that really put on a show in that last week was possibly the most toolsy player the Braves had on their DSL team this year, so it seemed a good time to feature him. Yoeli Lopez is a 19 year-old outfielder signed out of the Dominican Republic, but he attended high school for some time in Miami. Lopez may not have stats on the season that will stand out, but in this last week, he showed the things that have a lot of intrigue in his profile. He hit .600/.714/.700 for the week with 6 runs scored, a double, an RBI, a 4/0 BB/K ratio, and 4 stolen bases. He’s got a blend of power and speed that is very raw, but it’s very intriguing for sure!

Honorable mention: The trade of Jeff Francoeur last week brought in a pair of lower-level prospects to the Braves. Dylan Moore was assigned to Carolina, and he made an instant impact, hitting .600/.615/.800 with 2 runs, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, a 2/2 BB/K ratio, and a stolen base in three games, playing shortstop two games and one game at third base.

Pitcher of the week: Wes Parsons has fought through injury and ineffectiveness this year, but since joining Carolina’s rotation, he’s been very solid. This week’s start was the best he’s had this season. He threw 7 innings, allowing one run on only 2 hits and a walk, striking out 7. He had the highest individual game score of the week among starters.

Honorable mention: Flying under the radar this year in Rome’s deep rotation, Ricardo Sanchez has made some very impressive progress as a pitcher this year. His start this week for Rome was one of his best as he threw 7 innings, allowing one unearned run on 4 hits and 3 walks, striking out 9 hitters. The teenage lefty is still young and has some of the best raw stuff in the system, but frequently he’s not considered in the same vein as guys like Allard, Fried, and such in his own rotation.

AAA Gwinnett Braves (61-74)

Thursday

Gwinnett struck early and held on during a late Buffalo flurry to win 6-4 Thursday. Jed Bradley made yet another excellent start, going 7 innings, allowing one run on 5 hits and 4 walks, striking out 6. Rio Ruiz had a tremendous day at the plate, going for a home run, a double, and two walks. Emilio Bonifacio had a double, single, and a walk. Mel Rojas had two singles. Sean Kazmar had a double and a walk. Braeden Schlehuber had a double.

Friday

Gwinnett had a big offensive game, defeating Durham 11-1. Tyrell Jenkins made the start, going 5 scoreless innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 4. Mel Rojas had a home run, triple, and a double. Rio Ruiz had three singles. Ronnier Mustelier and Reid Brignac each had a double, single, and a walk. Daniel Castro had a double and a single. Emilio Bonifacio had a triple and a single.

Saturday

Chris Ellis continued to shuffle with Gwinnett as they lost to Durham on Saturday 5-3. Ellis went 6 innings, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 7. Emilio Bonifacio had a big day at the plate, with a double and three singles. Daniel Castro had a double and a single. Ronnier Mustelier had a home run. Rio Ruiz had a double. Mel Rojas had a stolen base.

Sunday

Durham outscored Gwinnett 10-6 on Sunday. Wilfredo Boscan made the start and went 3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and a walk, striking out 3. Ronnier Mustelier hit a home run, double, and a single. Rio Ruiz had a double and a walk. Tyler Moore had a home run and a walk. Reid Brignac walked twice. Emilio Bonifacio, Sean Kazmar, and Daniel Castro each had a single and a walk.

Carolina hit well early, but the bats went silent as Myrtle Beach kept scoring, leading to a 8-4 Mudcat loss on Thursday. Caleb Beech went 5 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and a walk, striking out 5. Travis Demeritte had a home run, single, and a walk. Sean Godfrey had two singles. Braxton Davidson had a single and a walk.

Friday

The Mudcats got excellent offensive production and a stellar start from Matt Withrow to defeat Winston-Salem 7-1 on Friday. Withrow went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 7. Sean Godfrey had three singles and a stolen base. Dylan Moore had a double, single, and a walk. Travis Demeritte and Tanner Murphy each had two singles and a walk. Erison Mendez had a double and a single. Luis Valenzuela had two singles. Braxton Davidson had a single and a walk. J.B. Moss had a double.

Saturday

Carolina came back to score 4 runs in the last two innings to beat Winston-Salem 5-4 Saturday. Ryan Clark went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 3. Jordan Edgerton had three singles. Dylan Moore had a double and a single. Travis Demeritte had a double.

Sunday

Winston-Salem tattooed Mudcat pitching on Sunday, winning 15-2. Enderson Franco went 5 innings for Carolina, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and a walk, striking out 2. Travis Demeritte had 2 doubles. Dylan Moore had two singles, a walk, and a steal. Jordan Edgerton had a double and a walk.

Thursday

Rome walked off with a win over Kannapolis Thursday 2-1. Touki Toussaint made the start and had a great game, going 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 9. Anfernee Seymour was the only Rome hitter on base twice with a walk and a single along with two stolen bases. Tyler Neslony had a stolen base.

Friday

Rome’s game was cut short after the top of the 6th due to rain with the Braves leading 7-1. Kolby Allard went 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and no walks, striking out 9. Interestingly, though he had no walks, Allard struggled with hitting his target throughout the game, so while it was a nice looking game statistically, it wasn’t Allard’s best look for sure. Jared James had a very good day at the plate with a home run, a single, and a walk. Anfernee Seymour had a single and two walks along with a steal. Ray-Patrick Didder and Justin Ellison each had a double and a single. Kevin Josephina had two singles and a stolen base. Ronald Acuna had a single and two walks.

Saturday

Rome was taken down by a poor rehab start by Williams Perez as they lost 7-2. Perez went 3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 2. Oriel Caicedo made a great relief appearance, going 4 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts. Jared James had a triple. Kevin Josephina had a double.

Sunday

Max Fried had excellent strikeout stuff, but not the control needed, and it cost him in a 5-3 loss on Sunday to Augusta. Fried went 6 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 10. Lucas Herbert had three singles. Alejandro Salazar and Juan Yepez each had two singles. Ray-Patrick Didder had two walks.

Kingsport took down Danville on Sunday 5-4. Jaret Hellinger started the game, but he only lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks, striking out 5. GCL completed Wednesday’s game and then played their regularly scheduled game as well. In the first game, Dilmer Mejia and Jasseel De La Cruz combined for 7 innings of shutout ball, only allowing 2 hits and no walks combined while striking out 3 hitters between the two of them. Randy Ventura walked three times and stole a base. Kurt Hoekstra had a double. Shean Michel, Luis Ovando, and Jeremy Fernandez each had stolen bases.

In the regularly scheduled game, the Braves turned a scoreless game after 3 innings into a 7-2 win. Alan Rangel threw well, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 2. Alejandro Salazar and Alan Crowley each had a single and 2 walks. A.J. Pierzynski and Anthony Concepcion had a single and walk each.
