Hitter of the week: Coming into the season, I viewed Carlos Castro as a guy who had the build of a power hitter, but he’d only exhibited good average hitting before 2016. Instead, he came into the season with a different swing and was a power-only guy for a lot of the season. After hitting .308 and .319 in 2014 and 2015 with 3 home runs total, Castro on July 4th came into the day leading the organization with 10 home runs, but also hitting .198. We’re a month and a half later, and he’s still hitting for power, but he’s got his average to .259 now on the season. On the week, Castro hit .462/.462/1.000 with 4 runs scored, a double, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, and even a stolen base!
Honorable mention: The Braves brought in Blake Lalli to build up their upper level depth at catcher, and due to injury, he’s spent a lot of time at first, but his bat hasn’t had a week like it did this week. On the week, Lalli hit .550/.609/.750 with 4 doubles, 4 runs scored, 6 RBI, and a 3/1 BB/K ratio.
Pitcher of the week: I’ll gladly admit I’m wrong when it happens, but count me as one very surprised at Max Povse‘s success in Mississippi. He was struggling just before his promotion with repeating his delivery, and with his height, that’s going to be a constant worry, but it’s hard to deny when a guy puts up an 80+ game score! Povse hurled the best game of the week by far with an 8 inning gem in Mississippi’s 16-inning marathon. He gave up just 2 hits and a walk, striking out 5 as he racked up an 82 game score.
Honorable mention: Joining Povse in Mississippi will be one of the guys who I was very hopeful on before the season and have been pushing all season – one Patrick Weigel. He finished off his time in Rome in fine fashion, hurling 7 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks, striking out 9 hopeless hitters. He’ll be skipping right over high-A Carolina and going straight to Mississippi to finish 2016.

Thursday’s game was postponed due to rain.
Friday
Gwinnett split a double header on Friday with Charlotte. In game one, the Braves took the game 7-5. Matt Wisler threw the complete 7-inning game, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and no walks, striking out 4. Braeden Schlehuber had two doubles. Blake Lalli had a double and a single. Emilio Bonifacio and Brandon Snyder each had two singles, and Snyder added a steal. Reid Brignac and Kyle Kubitza each had a single and a walk.
In game 2, Charlotte put up 5 in the 2nd inning and made it stand up, defeating the Braves 5-1. Aaron Blair made the start and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 1. Mel Rojas had a triple. Emerson Landoni had a double.
Saturday
Gwinnett’s game Saturday was ended early due to rain with the Braves grabbing a victory over Rochester 5-1. Jed Bradley had an excellent AAA debut, going 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and a walk, striking out 9. Rio Ruiz was an absolute force at the plate, hitting two home runs and a triple. Emilio Bonifacio had two triples. Blake Lalli had a double and a walk. Sean Kazmar had a double.
Sunday
The Braves got down early Sunday and couldn’t overcome the early deficit as they fell to Rochester 3-2. Stephen Janas made a spot start and threw 4 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 1. Brad Roney pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing 2 hits and no walks, striking out 7. Sean Kazmar had a home run and a single. Brandon Snyder had a home run. Ronnier Mustelier had a double.

Friday
Mississippi was swept out of a double header on Saturday. In game 1, Pensacola scored the winning run in the top of the 7th inning to win 1-0. Michael Mader took the hard-luck loss, going 7 innings, allowing the one run on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 5. Joey Meneses had two singles. Dustin Peterson had a double.
Once again, scoring didn’t happen until the final inning, this time until extras as the teams went beyond their scheduled 7 innings, with Pensacola winning 2-1 in 9 innings. Taylor Lewis started the game and went 3 1/3 innings, allowing just 1 hit and one walk, striking out 3. Dustin Peterson had a single and a walk. Carlos Franco had two walks. Joey Meneses and Johan Camargo each had a double.
Saturday
Mississippi won the marathon on Saturday night, defeating Pensacola in 16 innings, 2-1. No scoring was done until the final 16th inning. Max Povse started for the M-Braves and threw 8 innings, allowing 2 hits and a walk, striking out 5. Stephen Gaylor and Levi Hyams each had two singles. Ozzie Albies had a double and a walk. Dustin Peterson had a single and a walk. Joseph Odom had a double. Connor Lien had two walks.
Sunday
He was erratic, but it took starter Lucas Sims leaving the game for Pensacola to strike and finally take the game over the M-Braves 6-3. Sims went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 7. Joseph Odom had a double and two singles. Connor Lien and Stephen Gaylor each had a single and a walk.
