Five Quick Predictions for Atlanta Today (Maybe Not Terribly Bold)

My premise on this is that Kansas City was the team most interested and they have now fallen completely out of the race in the AL.

I will hedge that bet slightly in that whoever loses in the Jay Bruce contest may circle back to Atlanta… but that could be tough to do quickly.  Also, he could be moved later in August.  If you’re looking for a surprise, then maybe watch the Tigers.

Same thing here… there is no need for a sense of urgency on Aybar, as he is certainly a mid-August waiver trade candidate.  Teams may focus on priorities today and if there remains a need for Aybar, that can be dealt with later.

By contrast, there are probably a dozen teams looking for relief pitching, and I expect that most of the action will involve Johnson today.

Note that I’m not claiming Atlanta will get him, though I do believe they will be involved as a finalist… it just makes too much sense not to.

If for some reason he is not dealt now by the Brewers, I’d look for him to stay with the club until the off-season.  A waiver-trade scenario is not a good one for Milwaukee… for one thing, Atlanta would claim him immediately.

  • Dang!  Grant beat me to this one!

I agree:  if you’re looking for a surprise deal today, this one could be it.  A.J. Pierzynski is also a candidate, though like Aybar, it is more likely that he could be moved sometime in August.
