Atlanta Braves Morning Chop: Trading Deadline Edition
On April 25th, We proposed a trade… and Coppy tried to pull it off this week
We now know what did happen – Atlanta swapped Hector Olivera for Matt Kemp. But there was another deal that John Coppolella tried to do before that.
Back on April 25th, we gave you a hint of what a Braun-for-Olivera deal might have looked like.
My offer at the time was to include Lucas Sims as a sweetener to help Milwaukee take the deal, with the Braves getting money and Ryan Braun in a manner similar to that of the ultimate Kemp swap that happened.

- Why the Atlanta Braves won’t extend Max Fried
The differences:
- Milwaukee is not a ‘cash rich’ team and might have had trouble adding monies to the deal.
- While San Diego did add money, they didn’t actually send money of their own – they are merely forwarding mail from the Dodgers to Atlanta.
- The Braves, for their part, didn’t have to add any incentives: no prospects were lost in the facilitation of this deal.
It’s an interesting contrast now, looking back at our proposal vs. the actual deal. The reader comments at the time are also interesting!
In the end, Coppy managed to turn nothing into … well, we will all find out together, won’t we?
