Braves Pitching Hung in There, Manage a 4-4 Tie With Orioles

After a slow start, starter Matt Wisler made an adjustment after a consult with pitching coach Roger McDowell, then went on to start mowing down Oriole hitters last night in his last tune-up before the regular season begins.

As noted by David O’Brien, Wisler’s slider wasn’t sharp early on.  After McDowell pointed out that he wasn’t aggressively finishing his pitches, things changed.

  • Before:  2 homers and 3 walks
  • After:  4 strikeouts in the 4th/5th innings without a base-runner

That’ll work.

After that, relief pitchers Kinman, Grilli, Winkler, (Carlos) Torres, Cervenka, and Janas combined to give up just 1 run the rest of the way.

Daniel Winkler and Jason Grilli were particularly effective:  1 hit and 5 Ks between them in the 7th and 8th innings.

Also of note:  the bullpen walked nobody.  That’s better than it’s been lately, for sure.
