The Longest Tenured Managers in Baseball

I came across a list of managers that have been with the same team the longest – a list dating just from June of 2013.  The top eight are shown in a list.

Only 2 of those eight are still on that 2-year-old list:  Mike Scioscia of the Angels and Bruce Bochy of the Giants.

Scioscia is the only manager whose date of hire goes back to the last millenium:  November 18, 1999.  He’s got a 7-year lead on Bochy, and 8 to the next longest AL Manager (Joe Girardi).  You may recall that Girardi was fired from his Marlins post after just 1 season (2006) and replaced by Gonzalez, who still ranks as the manager of most games in Marlins’ history (3.4 seasons’ worth);

Of course, 5 teams have recently hired new field generals, with two more – the Brewers and Phillies – opting to keep their interim selections from earlier in the year.  Obviously, this is an industry with a high turnover rate.

So with all that, here’s the longest continuously serving NL Managers:

In the American League:   Scioscia, Joe Girardi, Ned Yost, and Buck Showalter all pre-date Gonzalez.  That latter pair were named during the 2010 season, so even that’s fairly close.

So yeah:  Fredi Gonzalez is now the 2nd-longest-serving NL Manager, and 6th longest of the 30 in major league baseball.  Chew on that with your turkey leftovers.
