Best Honeymoon Ever, Game 10: Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs

Game Review:

The final game of the trip had a solid pitching match up – Zack Greinke and Jason Hammel. Neither disappointed, and the game was the only extra inning game of the trip, going to extra innings where the Cubs won 1-0.

This game was likely known by many as the game where the father caught a foul ball over the fence while holding his baby in his other arm. The play ended up costing the Cubs an out, but the crowd gave the young father a standing ovation.

Getting to watch Yasiel Puig play was quite entertaining. His build doesn’t scream speed to you, but watching him leg out a triple showed some excellent speed, as did a couple solid plays in right field.

Stadium Review:

Wrigley’s new scoreboards are very well done. I was at the stadium in 2011, and the new scoreboards are a very welcome addition. The construction around the stadium comes at a cost – I was unable to get a picture of Ron Santo‘s statue, which has been temporarily taken down as it is in the construction area, food stands were seemingly short on supplies, and bathrooms are few and far between. The improvements are supposed to help in those areas, however.

One of the things that saddened me was the fans in Wrigley. I enjoyed chatting with fans at Wrigley when I went in 2011, but the fans around me at this game were quite different. When “the wave” was started at one point, people screamed loudly that “real fans” don’t do such things. That sort of elitism can drive away a fan of any age who is early in their baseball fandom and still enjoying as much the nuance and outside things of the game as the game itself.

All that doesn’t take away from Wrigley being one of my favorite experiences in baseball, though!
