Best Honeymoon Ever, Game 4: Atlanta Braves at Boston Red Sox

Game Review:

The game at Fenway was wet, wet, wet, but because it was the only time the Braves were in town, they were going to get in the game no matter what, so we knew we wouldn’t be rained out. As it was, the game was more a steady mist than true rain.

More from Tomahawk Take

The Braves threw Williams Perez, and I don’t get to toot my own horn often, but I was pushing Perez two years ago when he was in Rome. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but he looked like more than his reputed “system filler” label. Last year, he took that next step forward at Mississippi, and he’s continued to show resiliency, going at least 5 innings in every single one of his starts this year, completing 6 in 5 of the 7. For a team whose bullpen has been just a touch shaky, a starter giving 6 every night is huge!

Perez pitched himself to three double plays in the first three innings of the game en route to 6 shutout innings on the night. He only threw 79 pitches on the game, but on this night, that seemed to be quite taxing, and it showed as he walked his only two batters of the game in his final inning.

One of the moments on this trip that I can genuinely say I’ve never seen in baseball before was the review on Andrelton Simmons‘ HBP in the top of the 7th. Simmons was trying to pull the bat back when his hand was hit, but I’d never seen that ever called a HBP, so when the review came back with that ruling, I was ecstatic. On the flip side, everyone sitting around us was certain Simmons’ finger was broken on the play, and in the 9th inning, he finally had to make a throw, and on a routine play, Simmons committed a throwing error.

Another one of those things you don’t see every day: Freddie Freeman stole a base, and not due to indifference, either!

Stadium Review:

It’s Fenway. My first trip there just oozed with historical significance. Of course, we had toured Boston throughout the day in the rain, so most of our party was soaking wet, including my wife. I also struggled to fit my oversized backside into the original seats we happened to have, though I probably could have moved to another spot as many of the “new” seats were not taken due to the falling mist.

The history of the stadium simply overwhelms you. My wife and I took a picture from the top of the Green Monster, and I explained the significance of the “old school” scoreboard. One of the challenges of the trip was finding food for my lovely wife, who is a pescatarian who cannot do dairy, making options quite limited at most ballparks. Fenway, however, had a tremendously good portabella mushroom burger, and she rated it as one of the best foods on the trip for her. I had a jumbo Fenway dog, and it was easily the largest hot dog I saw at any game on the trip.

Tomorrow we head to New York City!
