Marlins fire manager Mike Redmond

STAFF REPORT / SI.COM

The Miami Marlins have fired manager Mike Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary, the team announced Sunday.

The announcement came immediately after the Marlins lost 6–0 to the Atlanta Braves, who completed a sweep. Miami was nearly no-hit by Atlanta’s Shelby Miller.

Redmond was hired as Miami’s manager in November 2012. At the end of the 2014 season, the club signed him to a contract extension through 2017.  [emphasis added]

After going 77–85 last year, the Marlins have started this season 16–22. Miami went 155–207 with Redmond at the helm.

In April, the Miami Herald reported that Redmond was on the hot seat and that the team’s front office was already looking around for possible replacements.

[ Ed. note: Reports are widespread this morning that Miami General Manager Dan Jennings will be named as the field skipper and Lineup Card Signer this morning.  This ranks as the most preposterous managerial hire I can think of since Ted Turner ran the Atlanta Braves on May 11, 1977… for a day… until Commissioner Bowie Kuhn and National League president Chub Feeney both shot him down.

I refer to Jennings as ‘lineup card signer’, because he possesses no skills to manage a major league ballclub.  He should know his own personnel, but beyond this, he is well over his head in terms of bullpen management, use of bench players, strategy of the game, positioning defenses, and a myriad of other things necessary to being a competent field boss.  This is another case of owner Jeffrey Loria being the puppet master.

So as of this morning, the Miami Marlins:

  • Are in 4th place, with the 5th worst NL record
  • Have no General Manager (guessing on an internal promotion here)
  • Have no Bench Coach (how important will this be now?!)
  • Have no competent Field Manager

Update:  according to the USA Today, advance scout Mike Goff will be the bench coach.  Hooooo boy.

Wow.  Shelby Miller destroyed them yesterday.  At least the Diamondbacks are coming to town. ]
