Asdrubal Cabrera to the Nationals

Finally. Something not involving the Red Sox… but then again, it’s personal to the Braves.

The Nats have replaced the loss of Ryan Zimmerman with the All-Star shortstop of the Cleveland Indians, a trade made in exchange for infielder Zach Walters. This doesn’t smell like enough of a return, given that he’s the 13th ranked prospect, a guy who strikes out too much but has some power.

WHO WINS: Washington, thus far.

IMPACT ON THE RACE: Replaces some of the offense lost from Zimmerman, and probably upgrades their infield defense as well… but only because we were talking about Zimmerman. Cabrera is no better than average.

IMPACT ON OTHER TRADES: None.

IMPACT TO THE BRAVES: Hurts the Braves, for certain. Without Cabrera, you could make an argument that Atlanta could hang with Washington – offensively and otherwise. This changes the equation a bit more in their favor. Not significantly, but somewhat.
