September 8th Power Rankings: Now the Atlanta Braves lose Fried
By James Kunkle
10. Toronto Blue Jays
So here is the deal, ask anyone back in March who the best team this year out of New York would be, and the majority would have said the Yankees. However, it has been the Blue Jays. 2020 in a nutshell for you.
9. Chicago Cubs
Yu Darvish has been dealing all year but Kyle Hendricks turned in a quality outing on Labor day to give the Cubs some much needed breathing room over the Cardinals who are the closest pursuer in the NL Central.
8. Atlanta Braves
Tuesday brought the news that Atlanta Braves fans were certainly not looking forward too as Max Fried was put on the shelf. Hopefully it will not be a long absence and also Cole Hamels can come back fresh quickly.
7. Minnesota Twins
The Twins rebounded from a long losing streak to win 6 out of 7 last week. At this point in the season the AL Central is becoming a must watch race as three teams all sit within a game of each other.
6. Oakland Athletics
A big week is on tap for the Athletics as they can really put a tight hold on the AL West if they are able to beat up on the struggling Houston Astros. Monday was a good start as they shut them out 6-0.
5. Cleveland Indians
I watched some of the Indians game on Sunday when Shane Bieber was starting for them. My goodness, that guy is lethal. Cleveland has a knack for always having guys have career years and Bieber is just the latest example.
4. San Diego Padres
It’s time to take the Padres serious as the probable second best team in the National League this season. They did incur a little bump as Eric Hosmer broke his finger on a bunt attempt over the weekend.
3. Chicago White Sox
One of the most under appreciated players in the game today is Jose Abreu. He has finally gotten a chance to show off his talents on a winning club and is currently in the midst of a 20 game hitting streak.
2. Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays had another week of stellar pitching and timely hitting. It has become clear they are clearly the best team in the AL East this year
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
Ho-hum. Another week, and another Dodgers team at number 1 in the rankings. The Dodgers could lose the rest of their games and finish at .500 and quite possibly still make the playoffs. Clearly the best team so far.
So that is our rankings this week. Let us know in the comments below who is too high and who is too low.
