Picks 14, 28, and 41

This is where you can really start to get a little picky with these …. picks. And looking back in hindsight is obviously a lot easier.

But at 41 the Braves took a shot on the big bat of Austin Riley. Some of the well-known names taken right after him include Triston McKenzie of the Indians who was taken 42nd overall and Scott Kingery of the Phillies who was taken 48th overall.

I still think of that group the Braves made the right choice in taking Riley who has the highest upside of those three.

You probably won’t find many Braves fans who would re-do Mike Soroka at 28. In fact, you probably have a lot of other teams doing re-drafts of 2015 wishing they had taken Soroka much earlier in this draft.

Soroka, at the very least, looks like a top of the rotation pitcher for a long time in the big leagues if not an ace.

Ke’Bryan Hayes, Kyle Funkhouser, Ryan Mountcastle, and Daz Cameron are some of the bigger names taken just after Soroka. But again, I think the Braves definitely got this one right.

The one Braves fans probably wish they could redo the most is Allard at 14.

To be fair to the Braves, there were a lot of big names in this draft that went ahead of that 14th pick.

Andrew Benintendi went at seven, Ian Happ went at nine, and Garrett Whitley went one spot ahead of Allard at 13.

And there really isn’t a whole lot that went right after Allard that would have been much better.

Between the pick of Allard at 14 and Soroka at 28 the only name that stands out is Walker Buehler who went 24th overall.

And yes, looking back, that would have been a much better pick for the Braves. I mean, could you imagine Buehler and Soroka atop the current rotation?

But again, I think the Braves did pretty well in this draft. So far only one player has really panned out with there still being question marks on Riley and Minter.

Allard to help bring us Chris Martin, so that’s a positive as well.
