First Base

. 1B. Atlanta Braves. Freddie Freeman. 3. player. 17

There’s really no question as to who will play first base for the Atlanta Braves in 2020, it’s just a question of will anybody else?

Despite experiencing elbow sourness for years, he’s played at least 158 games in three of the past four seasons.

Now those elbow issues appear to be behind him after offseason surgery, and I’m expecting a monster season for Freeman in 2020.

I’m not worried at all about the little hiccup he had at the beginning of spring training. That’s normal after surgery.

I just hope Freddie finally has a fully healthy season and wins that MVP that has been alluding him.

If Freddie is healthy all season, there might be five games all year where they need someone to fill in at first base because Freddie is going to take the field every day if you let him.

On the 40-man roster, I think Austin Riley is the best back-up first baseman we have.

Yonder Alonso and Peter O’Brien have been getting a lot of reps there this spring.

Alonso has not hit the ball well at all, while O’Brien leads the team with 4 home runs this spring.

But O’Brien has also struck out 12 times in 29 at-bats.

If something were to happen to Freddie, I think Riley is the one who would take his spot. But I wouldn’t be surprised if O’Brien is next in line if he stays with the team and starts the season in Triple-A.
