Nationals: Kurt Suzuki, Yan Gomes

I’ve said it many times before, I thought it was a mistake for the Braves to let Kurt Suzuki go last offseason in favor of re-signing Tyler Flowers.

I get that Suzuki is not a great defender, but I’m also not in the camp that believes Flowers is a great defender despite what the stats say. Anyone that watches Flowers on a nightly basis knows he’s not a great defender, but I digress.

Mainly, I just love Suzuki and his presence in the clubhouse.

The 36-year-old wasn’t fantastic last season hitting .264/.324/.486 with 17 home runs in 85 games and accumulating 0.6 WAR.

Yan Gomes played in 97 games last year and wasn’t fantastic either as a 0.8 WAR player. His deficiencies mainly came on offense where he hit just .223/.316/.389 with 12 home runs.

Defensively he was solid ranking 14th in baseball with 5 DRS.

However, he picked it up with the bat in the postseason picking up 3 hits in the NLCS and World Series each. He was really good in the NLCS going 3-for-7 with a double and 3 RBI.

These two will once again split duties in 2020 and help guide one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball.
