What’s next, and who are the favorites

Hernandez is scheduled to start the third round of starts for each pitcher on Tuesday as he takes on the Rays.

Then it will likely go Soroka on Wednesday, off-day on Thursday, Wilson on Friday, Fried on Saturday, Folty/Wright on Sunday, and then Newcomb on Monday.

The Braves do have a split-squad game next Tuesday, so perhaps they push a pitcher back a day to give someone else a start that day.

Each pitcher should get at least three more starts, and we should see them push to four and five innings these next two times around. That will give us a much better indicator as to who the favorites are.

But as things stand right now, Newcomb and Felix appear to be the favorites. Again, it just feels like there is a big push for Felix to make this Opening Day rotation if he pitches well — and so far he is.

I still think Kyle Wright is the most deserving right now, but if all three of those guys are throwing the ball well, Wright is likely the odd man out.

While I’ve been saying for a while that I’d like for King Felix to make a comeback in Atlanta, I don’t want it to be at the expense of holding back one of our young starters like Wright who could be in for a breakout season.

Either way, it’s great to have options this early in spring training that are all pitching well. This situation will work itself out over the next couple of weeks.
