Who plays third base?

This is by far the biggest question that needs answering this Spring. Once the Braves failed to re-sign Josh Donaldson the spotlight was immediately put on Austin Riley and Johan Camargo.

This will be a true position battle in spring training as I don’t think either player goes into it with an edge over the other.

I guess you could say Johan has a slight edge as he’s done it for a full season before, and Riley could benefit from some more time in Triple-A.

As Alan and Fred pointed out on the last podcast we recorded, spring training isn’t really going to show us if Riley has fixed his issue with seeing pitches because pitchers are mostly just working on things in spring training and getting their arm strength up.

But nevertheless, whoever performs better in spring training between Camargo and Riley will win this job.

If both look good, then — as I said — I think Camargo has the advantage.

However, if Riley hits 5 bombs this Spring it’s going to be hard for the Braves to send him back down.

A lot of people are upset that the Braves didn’t find a third baseman this offseason, but the front office is hoping they have two capable guys already on the roster.

At least one of them needs to prove that this Spring, and that’s something we’ll be watching for and covering heavily at Tomahawk Take.
