Best callers

Bloomberg Business Week ranks umpire accuracy when calling balls and strikes. This season the crew for the Atlanta Braves series looks pretty accurate.  Among umpires with over 3600+ calls this season:

  • First game ump Pat Hoberg’ 93% ties him for first with for others
  • Game two ump Alan Porter, and game four umpire Ed Wolf’s both hit 92% accuracy
  • Game three ump Sam Holbrook posted a 90% rate as did game five umpire Tom Hallion
  • Ed Hickox posted 89%

Atlanta Braves starters have a lot of experience as a group with the plate umpires, but most of that belongs to Mike Foltynewicz in prior years.

Atlanta Braves pitchers and the umps one and two

Pat Hoberg called one game for Keuchel, his August 31 victory over the White Sox. That day Keuchel threw six innings and allowed two-run on nine hits; he struck out three without surrendering a walk.

Chris Martin didn’t do as well, pitching just two-thirds of an inning, he gave up three runs on three hits and faced six batters before Sean Newcomb came in to close the door. Josh Tomlin and Anthony Swarzak pitched two uneventful innings.

Game two home plate ump Alan Porter called one game for Mike Foltynewicz, the Braves June 22 win over the Nationals. While the Braves came back to win, Foltynewicz lasted just four innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits including a homer, and two walks. The Braves sent him to Gwinnett after that game.

Porter wasn’t the problem that game, as Swarzak, Jerry Blevins, Grant Dayton, and Luke Jackson pitched well. A.J. Minter gave up the only other run after pitching to six batters, walking one and striking out one.
