2. The Bad(?) News

Let’s hope that these game notes don’t become the lead story later.

Before the game began, we learned of an update to Johan Camargo‘s condition.

You might recall that he drilled a foul ball directly off his right shin during an AB in Philadelphia.  XRays were said to be negative, but after a couple of days, the team doctors took another look.

In terms of roster moves, there’s no real news here:  since we’re in September, a 40-man dugout in in play, so anyone can be brought in who’s on the 40-man roster.

In terms of the injury, Bowman is over-stating the news a bit.  The ‘fracture’ is said to be a ‘micro-fracture’, and later reports suggested that it will be treated more like a bruise than a true broken leg.

So the suspicion is that Camargo will be on the IL for no more than the requisite 10 days – retroactive to September 12th.  This will allow him to be placed on a 1st round playoff roster if the Braves choose to do so.

But there was more unsettling news…

After the end of the 4th inning, Freddie Freeman was excused from further action on Friday evening.

There’s not much more to be said on this subject as yet – we’ll have to see how he feels over the weekend.  But so far, there’s no word on whether he hyper-extended the (throwing) elbow during a plate appearance … or what exactly.

POST-GAME UPDATE:

The fear here involves the fact that Freeman usually has to be tied to a post to keep him out of games, so seeing him come out for something supposedly minor would be a bit surprising… probably the right move, but nonetheless surprising.
