What will the Atlanta Braves do at catcher in 2020?

Internal Options

The most obvious and easiest thing for the Atlanta Braves to do is to pick up the $6 million option on Tyler Flowers and then pair him with Alex Jackson.

If I’m being completely honest, that idea makes me want to vomit.

If you follow me on Twitter (@ShortStopBall) my displeasure for Flowers’ work behind the plate is well documented.

He has been much better the past couple of weeks — coincidentally it has coincided with the emergence of Cervelli.

But I’ve never like Flowers behind the plate and personally I hope they don’t even pick up that option, but it’s hard to imagine them not picking it up at least as insurance.

And while it’s a VERY small sample size, Jackson has yet to pick up his first Major League hit in 15 plate appearances and hit just .229 at Triple-A this year; although he did hit 28 home runs.

If McCann wants to come back for another year I’d rather they not pick up the Flowers option ($2 million buyout) and give the remaining $4 million to B-Mac — would be a $2 million raise from what he’s making with the Braves this year.

And then see if they can’t find a catching partner in free agency.

Or they pick up the option on Flowers and just re-sign McCann. I wouldn’t love it, but it wouldn’t be terrible having both of them back next season.

I consider Cervelli an internal option at this point and I wouldn’t be against resigning him and pairing him with McCann next year.

However, that would give you two catchers 34 and older with some extensive injury history.
