Any More Relief in Sight?

There was this earlier rumor about Edwin Diaz, though the trade for Chris Martin will almost certainly snuff this:

While the acquisition of Chris Martin is very good and will certainly help the Braves, I can’t say that he’s ‘enough’ yet… so more is possible, though I can’t imagine one of the high-end/high-priced options being acquired.

Martin is probably a 7th/8th-inning pitcher for Atlanta alongside Anthony Swarzak.  That still leaves a closer opening, though we can expect him to stabilize that part of the pitching game.

UPDATE:  Anthopoulos is using words that suggest Martin may be the closer we get.

He does have some limited save experience (4 this season, only 5 over his career), so that’s clearly not a big part of his profile… but it might be.

Maybe roll the dice on Giles?

Best Guesses

In the best-case scenario, the Atlanta Braves might acquire…

  • OF Bat, Martin, and Roark or
  • OF Bat, Martin, and Ray
  • Another random/cheap deadline rental reliever is also plausible

The over/under is probably “1.5 trades”… thus anything more than 1 represents a good trade deadline… no matter who the acquisitions are.

Don’t start blaming Anthopoulos if the “under” is the winning side.  Buyer GM’s all over are being stymied severely, and it’s very likely that a lot of contenders will end up with empty shopping carts.

dark. Next. The Closer we really want

The deadline is 4pm Eastern time on Wednesday.
