Atlanta Braves: The numbers show this offense is elite
Team Rankings
The seven offensive categories I looked at for this exercise were runs, home runs, average, OPS, on-base, slugging and RBIs.
I added up where each team ranked in the NL in each category and divided that number by seven to come up with an aggregate number.
The Braves checked in at No. 2 on the aggregate ranking with an average of 2.43.
They are ranked second in runs, fourth in home runs, second in average, second in OPS, second in OBP and second in RBI.
The rest of the rankings shook out as followed:
- 1. Dodgers (2)
- 2. Braves (2.43)
- 3. Rockies (3.14)
- 4. Cubs (4.71)
- 5. Brewers (5.14)
- 6. Phillies (10.43)
There were a couple of things that stood out when compiling these numbers and by far the most glaring was just how poor the Phillies are offensively.
They were inside the top ten in the NL in just two categories and that was ninth in runs and RBIs.
Second was how poor of a home run hitting team the Rockies are considering they play in the launching pad of Coors Field.
They currently rank 10th in the NL in hitting the long ball, but are first in runs and average, which suggest they use the cavernous outfield for extra base hits more than the home run.
Predictably, the Dodgers are the best offense in the NL, but it was very close. The Braves scored 17 points, while the Dodgers scored 13.
L.A. was first in OPS, slugging and OBP, but were not outside the top three in any of the seven categories.
Onto the lineups.
