Atlanta Braves: 3 Takeaways From Tuesday Night’s Loss To Washington
By Steven Teal
3. Austin Riley Continues Great Work
Since being called up to the big leagues, Austin Riley has done nothing but contribute in big moments. He’s been a nice boost for an Atlanta Braves offense that struggled with runners on base.
No one knew what to expect when the Braves called up Riley but he has surely surpassed any predictions anyone could have had. I find myself constantly in awe of what he brings to the organization.
In his last 7 games (including Tuesday), Riley is batting an impressive .333/.375/.667 with an OPS of 1.175 which is absolutely ridiculous.
Riley continued to impress by going 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI on Tuesday night. He crushed a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs to bring Atlanta within a run of the Nationals.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to bring the Braves back in the end.
What that home run did, however, was simply add to the awe that surrounds Austin Riley.
With his sixth home run of the year, Riley became the fastest player in the live-ball era to reach this milestone in just 13 games. He just continues to shatter expectations each and every day for the Atlanta Braves organization.
It’s safe to assume that Austin Riley has no intention on ever going back to the minor leagues. He has a .365 batting average in 52 at-bats and seems to always come through in the clutch.
It was nice to have something positive to finish with. Austin Riley has really provided a nice boost in morale to the team and I don’t think that’s going anywhere.
It’s tough to deal with losses like the Braves experienced on Tuesday night, especially against a team that came into town 10 games under .500. Those are games Atlanta will have to win if they have any hope to catch the Phillies.
The Atlanta Braves will go for a series split Wednesday evening at 7:20 PM EST. Wednesday’s probable starters are Kevin Gausman (2-3, 4.33 ERA) vs. Anibal Sanchez (0-6, 5.10 ERA).
