3 Takeaways from Atlanta Braves’ series win vs. Cardinals
Teheran Grinded Out a Win
Is it time to start giving Julio Teheran some credit?
Yes – he’s had rough patches… 4 of 6 starts in April, he gave up 3+ runs. However, even in those, he went 6+ innings three times, and innings production can be as valuable as run prevention at times.
Once the calendar flipped to May, though, Teheran has suddenly turned around.
- 6 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs
- 6 innings, 3 hits, 1 run
- 5 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs
Last night was a bit of a nail-biter at times: St. Louis tried to spoil pitches and work counts; probably as a means of getting into the Braves bullpen early.
They more-or-less did, getting Teheran out of the game after 104 pitches, but by then the rout was on… and Teheran managed to survive with a bend-don’t-break outing.
Even better: Teheran has yielded no homers in those last 3 starts, and none in 4 of the last 5. Okay, yes: there were 3 allowed in that other game against the Padres, but it’s still a trend in the right direction.
Julio was also credited with the Win last night… his first since April 14th against 3 losses and 2 no-decisions. His ERA is down to a respectable 3.88 and hitters simply aren’t hitter him very well right now.
That’s what the Atlanta Braves need out of him in this rotation slot: steady, not spectacular. He delivered this on Thursday, and has been doing so for 3 straight starts now.
