(12-16) Rome Braves (A)

Week 5 Record: 3-2

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

(OF) Trey Harris

I started naming Player of the Week in the Week 3 report and Harris has been the man on offense for the Rome Braves in all three weeks, including Week 5.

This past week, Harris went 7-for-17 (.411 average) in 5 games, hitting 2 home runs, a double and a triple, as well as 10 RBI.

Over 28 total games in 2019, Harris has been the leader for Rome, batting .378 with 7 doubles, and 3 homers. In Week 5 alone, he picked up 10 of his 19 RBI for the season.

(RP/SP) Alan Rangel

Rangel hasn’t had a very successful start to the season, but Week 5 was a good week for him. Rangel made a start Thursday and struck out 9 in five innings, pitching around 7 hits and three runs. He walked three.

Used as a reliever and a starter (4 appearances and 3 starts), Rangel has generated a 6.14 ERA in 2019. The run prevention hasn’t been ideal, but the 31 strikeouts and only 6 walks has been.

(4/29) Monday: OFF DAY

(4/30) Tuesday: Lost 9-7 vs. Greensboro Grasshoppers – FULL RECAP

  • (P) T. Riley: 4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
  • (DH) T. Harris: 2-4, 3B, 3 RBI, R, K
  • (3B) B. Venter: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI

Starter Trey Riley lost his fourth decision on Tuesday, getting roughed up to the tune of five earned runs and 3 home runs.

Reliever Victor Vodnik appeared in the 6th inning and allowed four runs before he finally got 5 outs, getting pulled after 1.2 innings in a rare poor outing for Vodnik.

Trey Harris tried to mount a comeback in the 8th with an RBI single, scoring Carlos Paraguate (who went 0-4 with a K). Justin Dean went 2-for-5 with a run-scored and Greg Cullen finished 1-for-4 with a double, a run-scored, an RBI and a strikeout.

(5/1) Wednesday: Lost 8-3 vs. Greensboro Grasshoppers – FULL RECAP

  • (P) O. Javier: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
  • (LF) T. Harris: 2-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
  • (C) R. Rodriguez: 1-3, 2B, BB

The Grasshoppers jumped out to 6-0 lead after three innings, thanks to 3 homers in the third and a throwing error by Brendan Venter. The hot Trey Harris was the lone run provider with a home run in the 4th inning and 9th inning.

After Harris’s two homers, the Braves only had 3 more hits as a team; coming from Justin Dean (1-for-4 with two Ks), Logan Brown (1-for-2 with a run, two walks and a K), and Ricardo Rodriguez‘s double.

(5/2) Thursday: Won 5-3 vs. Greensboro Grasshoppers – FULL RECAP

  • (P) A. Rangel: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 9 K
  • (DH) L. Brown: 1-4, 2B, RBI, R, K
  • (RF) T. Harris: 2-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R

Starter Andres Rangel was carving up hitters Thursday, striking out 9 (season-high) and picking up the win for Rome.

The Braves picked up 9 hits, including 4 doubles and a steal (by Trey Harris). Braulio Vasquez picked up 2 hits and an RBI, as well as a run; and catcher Ricardo Rodriguez also got two knocks, plating a run.

In his first game with Rome, shortstop Ariel Montesino finished 1-for-3 with a double. The Rome bullpen was strong as well, combining for 4 innings and two strikeouts, only surrendering 2 hits.

(5/3) Friday: Won 6-3 vs. Lakewood BlueClaws – FULL RECAP

  • (P) G. Noguera: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
  • (P) D. Mejia: 4.1 IP, H, 0 BB, 5 K (winner)
  • (DH) T. Harris: 1-4, 4 RBI

Rounding out the Braves minor league results for Friday, the Rome Braves got the win, giving the Braves organization 4 wins for the day (the first time that has happened this season, I believe).

Not to mention the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins on Friday, so make that 5 wins for Friday.

It was all Trey Harris on Friday, as he plated 4 out of the 6 runs scored by Rome. Justin Dean and Andrew Moritz contributed the other 2 ribbies, with the former finishing 1-for-3 and the latter 2-for-3 with a walk. Both Dean and Moritz stole two bases on Friday as well.

(5/4) Saturday: Won 2-1 vs. Lakewood BlueClaws – FULL RECAP

  • (P) J. Olague: 7 IP, 4 H, ER, 0 BB, 4 K
  • (3B) B. Venter: 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB
  • (1B) G. Benson: 1-3, 2B, R, BB, K

Saturday night Rome won a close one and starter Jose Olague pitched around 4 hits and 11 flyouts, picking up his second win of 2019.

Down 1-0 in the 5th, Brendan Venter hit a two-run double to give the Braves the lead; a lead they wouldn’t give up.

Justin Dean finished 1-for-4 and Andrew Moritz also went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. Shortstop Carlos Paraguate picked up a hit in 3 at-bats, striking out once as well. Rome’s catcher, Logan Brown, went hitless with a strikeout in 4 tries.

Reliever Lukas Young grabbed his fourth save, striking out one and surrendering just a hit in his one frame of work.

(5/5) Sunday: PPD (rained out)

Heavy rain forced a postponement of Rome’s Sunday night affair with Lakewood. The two teams will face off in a doubleheader (7 inning games) on Monday, beginning at 4:35 p.m. (EST).

Rome’s Trey Riley will start Game 1 and Odalvi Javier will take the bump in Game 2.
