Atlanta Braves: Arodys Vizcaino to IL, Sean Newcomb demoted
What’s going on with Newk?
I think after Newcomb’s outing against the New York Mets on Saturday, most knew he was likely to take a trip back to the minors.
If you look at his numbers for the season, they aren’t terrible. He has a 4.38 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched.
But he has a WHIP of 1.87, a BB/9 of 5.8, and he’s only made it past the fourth innings once (against the Marlins).
Newcomb has also only recorded 5 strikeouts compared to 8 walks, and that is not something a Major League pitcher can survive on.
The frustrating thing about it is that Newk has some of the best stuff on the team, but if you can’t command your pitches, it doesn’t do much good.
A lot of us were expecting/hoping Newk would take another step forward this year and be a solid number two behind Mike Foltynewicz.
For now, it doesn’t look like that is going to happen.
Hopefully going down to Gwinnett will help him gain some confidence back and he can finish the season strong with the Atlanta Braves.
After the performance Touki Toussaint had in relief of Newcomb on Saturday, I think it’s safe to say for now that he’ll take his spot in the Atlanta Braves starting rotation.
