Will Anyone Give In?

The market for Kimbrel never really developed this offseason, and it’s literally one of the biggest mysteries of the offseason.

We are talking about possibly the second best closer in the history of the game. Are teams really this scared of giving him a  long-term deal because of a few outings in the playoffs?

Look at Kimbrel’s overall numbers and tell me if you don’t want that guy closing games for your team?

I’m not saying the Atlanta Braves should give in to his commands of a six-year deal for around $100 million. As great as Kimbrel, I think it’s unwise to give any reliever that kind of money.

But when Zack Britton gets three years and $39 million, Kimbrel deserves at least a four-year deal for around $50 million.

But the market is what it is, and at this point Kimbrel has had no market.

Maybe now with at least two teams in on him, it will drive up the price. But the feeling from the Braves all along is that they are not going to budge.

If that’s the case, then I think the Brewers end up signing Kimbrel before Opening. The Brewers just need to give him a three-year deal worth around $15 million and I think they’ll have their closer.

And it sounds like their interest in Kimbrel could be serious.

It’s going to be a hard pill to swallow for Atlanta Braves fans if Kimbrel ends up signing with the Brewers. But with what we know of the situation — and that’s not much — I’d put my money on the Brewers at this point.

Either way, we should know something pretty soon with Opening Day coming up. And wherever he signs, I’ll kind of be glad it’s over and we can move on with our lives.
