Atlanta Braves move quickly and name Dana Brown VP Scouting
By Fred Owens
What do we know?
We know that Anthopoulos and Brown are friends and he tried to bring him on board after taking the Atlanta Braves job in 2017. The withdrawal of Tinnish might well indicate executives were unwilling to come to Atlanta until all of the skeletons left the closet.
We know that Brown has built successful scouting departments in the past and signed some well known, highly talented players. He’s widely respected in the game and brings some lost gravitas back to the position after the dismissal of Roy Clark and Brian Bridges.
When Anthopoulos hired Brown in Toronto and the press suggested that he was bringing in all of his friends, he was quick to quell that idea.
"“He’s not here because he’s my friend,” Anthopoulos said. “He’s here because I think he’s a great baseball man, a great evaluator and a good human being.”"
That’s a Wrap
A whirlwind of emotions crashed into Atlanta Braves fans with the dismissal of Clark and Bridges, both of whom are legends in the history of the Atlanta Braves. We don’t know – will probably never know – why Anthopoulos gave them new contracts in October only to fire them in January; and it really doesn’t matter.
What does matter is that they filled the position quickly, with an experienced and respected individual who is no stranger to the way the Atlanta Braves GM thinks and works. That should make the transition smooth, and the ripples caused negligible.
Now, all we have to do is get that starter, right fielder and another bullpen piece.
