Atlanta Braves Sunday Chop: the great beat writer dance-off
The Issue
Basically, it’s this: Mish believes that the Braves are heavily involved in trying to get J.T. Realmuto from Atlanta… and Bowman is not.
Let’s look at the history… beginning with Mish. He’s not been opposed to calling out incorrect information in the past… never mind who it may have come from:
With that as a backdrop, here is the tweet that started this … ‘journey’:
While saying that (and assigning 25% ‘odds’ for where J.T. Realmuto ends up next Spring), he wasn’t entirely bent on the Braves getting the Marlins’ catcher. In fact, this was a follow-up from the same day:
These aforementioned odds/percentages (‘for entertainment purposes only’) have only served to track how ‘hot’ a given team might be on this rumor on a given day… but it’s still noteworthy that the Braves have appeared on all of his odds tweets.
So here’s been his progression of news bits after that date:
On November 21st, Mish did a podcast that include this topic. Shortly after Brian McCann inked his deal with the Braves, Mish held firm on his thoughts about the team’s continued pursuit of Realmuto:
He then expressed the belief that Miami really wanted one of Houston’s top prospects… but the Astros have clearly refused to budge.
There was other news – that Miami did try and convince their catcher to stick around for a while longer… which could be used as a reference point for future considerations:
Other info:
- Dec 4 – That Atlanta had offered a ‘package’ including Mike Soroka an Austin Riley.
- Dec 4 – Atlanta continuing to ‘pursue’ Realmuto even after getting Brian McCann back.
- Dec 4 – Phillies, Mets join the fray. Mish mentioned the Phils; Ken Rosenthal had the Mets.
- Dec 6 – Realmuto would be open to the idea of signing a contract extension with a ‘winning team/winning organization’… though not Miami.
- Dec 7 – Astros not aggressive in pursuit; Mets/Phils/Pads/Braves/Rays are perceived as top tier… LA/COL/MILW/Houston/CWS ‘in’, but not strongly so (Jim Bowden tweet retweeted). Mish singles out ATL/PHI/NYM especially.
December 10 had a noteworthy tweet… about the same time that the notion of the Mets suggesting various 3-way deals starting happening:
Then there was the December 12 tweet – note that date… this was on Wednesday, the last full day of the Winter meetings:
Also on that date: the Reds jumped into the conversation… though have faded just as quickly. Mish then suggested a clarification/correction on the Newcomb tweet – that Atlanta would not include either Soroka/Newcomb with Austin Riley in a trade deal.
Also on Dec 12 – he was able to confirm that the Rays had joined the hunt.
Finally on December 15 – Saturday, he says this:
UPDATE: THE METS ARE GETTING WILSON RAMOS. This almost certainly eliminates their participation in all of this.
We’ll get back to Mish in a bit.
