Atlanta Braves top May hitter

With the team hitting so well on the month, picking the best hitter was actually quite difficult. Let’s look at the individual leaders first…

  • BA (min 25 PA): Nick Markakis .362
  • OBP: Freddie Freeman .433
  • SLG: Nick Markakis .534
  • OPS: Freddie Freeman .951
  • R: Ozzie Albies 20
  • H: Nick Markakis 42
  • 2B: Nick Markakis 11
  • 3B: Charlie Culberson 2
  • HR: Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies 5
  • RBI: Freddie Freeman 21
  • SB: Ender Inciarte 5

The choice really came down to two on the month – Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis. As impressive as Markakis’ month was, Freeman was tremendously consistent all season, and even in the statistics that he is not ranked #1 in over the month, he’s highly ranked on the year.

Freeman hit .355/.433/.518 with 3 doubles and 5 home runs, scoring 16 runs and driving in 21, posting a 16/19 BB/K ratio over 127 plate appearances on the month.

The series the Atlanta Braves played in Miami from May 10-13 resulted in the team winning 3 of 4 games, and the one game of the 4 that Freddie didn’t get a hit was the one loss – go figure. In that series, Freeman had a 5-hit game and a 3-hit game. Overall, he finished the series going 9 for 15 with 3 home runs, drawing 3 walks and not striking out a single time.

Incredibly, Freeman’s two biggest games against the Marlins in that series were off of left-handed starters.
