Brooks Wilson RHSP

The Braves selected the unranked Wilson in round seven and signed him $130K under-slot. As I noted on the day. there’s no hard scouting data available to the public. The Braves must have done some quiet observation and liked what they saw/ The following if from my report.

According to his Stetson Alumni page, Wilson set records in his four years there.

"Wilson led the ASUN in 2017 with 127 strikeouts, finishing among the top five pitchers in the nation. He entered the 2018 season just 121 strikeouts away from the school record and 126 away from the ASUN career record."

After watching three videos I found his motion reminiscent of Kevin Brown with a similar release point, although he also dropped down sidearm on a couple of pitches. I saw a four-seam fastball that looked about 90 mph and a later chat with Ben Chase confirmed that guess and said Wilson shows a slider as well

Wilson flashed what I thought was a change at first but later I became convinced it was a Barry Zito – like hook, more 1-7 than 12 – 6.  He backed up two of those in the video. The second had the batter ducking for cover as the umpire rang him up.

Brett Langhorne 3B

The Braves selected Langhorne(unranked) in the tenth round and signed him significantly below slot.  My initial report is all I have to go on.

At Carson-Newman Langhorne hit .323/.433/.509 with a .45 wOBA, six homers, nine doubles and three triples in 167 AB . . . (no information on) defense other than this spiffy triple play,

This young man is a player the Braves see as underappreciated who they might well have taken in a later round signed early to save pool money. Moritz and Wilson fit that template to a lesser degree as well.
