Gwinnett weekend pitching

Friday night Kolby Allard had an off night for him, Allard threw 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, walking 3 and striking out 4.

Last season in AA, Allard featured a 7.7 K rate and 2.7 BB rate. His promotion to AAA this season predictable saw that BB rate stay steady but his K rate drop to 5.74.  His 2.22 ERA is a run lower than his AA ERA of 3.18 but his FIP is slightly higher at 3.54.

He goes deeper into games than other pitchers at AAA this year. In his 11 starts he’s gone eight innings once seven innings four times and six innings three times, averaging 6 1/3 IP a start.

Those numbers along with his LD, GB and FB rates are roughly the same as Mike Minor’s 2011 AAA season; there’s your statistical comp.

On Sunday the enigma that is Lucas Sims threw 6 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits. Working mostly as a starter for the Stripers, Sims posted a 1.45 ERA.

Though he features a 8.44 K/9, Fangraphs shows a 5.54 walk rate, 1.36 WHIP and 3.82 FIP. That screams middle reliever and his 10.2 K rate during the 10 innings with Atlanta backs that up.

Kyle Wright’s struggles continued Friday as he threw just 5 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits, walking five and striking out 2.

Since beginning his AA stint with two short starts without allowing a run, Wright’s made 11 starts throwing 55 1/3 innings while allowing 60 hits, 35 runs (33 earned) striking out 48 and walking 25.  That’s a 5.37 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.

On Saturday the Bryse Wilson the Braves expected started to appear one more. The big righty gave up 17 runs ((4.6.7) in his 11 innings (6, 2 2/3, 2 1/3) – 13.91 ERA, 2.909 WHIP – over his last three starts.

Saturday night he threw 7 1/3 innings, allowed 3 runs on 9 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. He seems to be settling in at AA and getting back on track.

Chad Sobotka picked up the rest of the innings and could be a promotion candidate soon.
