A realistic option for the Atlanta Braves

Attempting to acquire him after he clears waivers seems a realistic option for the Atlanta Braves. Unlike Jose Bautista, Ramirez is a serious power bat today.

The Red Sox never tried him at third, but he did play 97 games at third for the Marlins and Dodgers in 2012.  He wasn’t happy about being forced off short and it showed. He’s older and more accepting of his potential roles now.

In the past some felt his attitude affected the clubhouse. Carfardo suggested his time in Boston mellowed Hanley and he’d become more of a veteran leader without a hint of discontent. Later on High Heat with Chris Russo, Boston beat writer Sean McAdam supported that view. He said young Latin players viewed Ramirez as a mentor and that Hanley had become the guy keeping the clubhouse relaxed.

That’s A Wrap

I’ve never been a Hanley Ramirez fan but I see this as a no risk situation. Ramirez no longer has the range for shortstop but should be at least league average at third base.

He’ll cost only the league minimum and be eager to show the Red Sox they made a mistake. in interleague play he can DH and Johan Camargo or Ryan Flaherty can replace him for defense late if needed.

Next: Anyone feel a draft?

The Braves are in Boston now and since he’s been DFA there’s no prohibition against talking to him.  He can’t join any team until the Sox release him but a face to face with him might be enough to make him a Brave. Stay tuned. . .
