Mr. dependability

The Braves played 485 games in the last three years (162,161,162); Markakis played 474 of those games. In that time:

  • He hit 115 doubles, third in the NL behind Daniel Murphy and Nolan Arenado and sixth in the majors.
  • His 505 base hits are sixth in the NL and 16th in the majors.
  • His .357 OBP ranked sixth in the NL and tenth in the majors for players with at least 2000 PA.

Markakis stepped to the plate 1077 times in medium and high leverage situations. In those PA, Fangraphs shows:

  • A traditional slash line of  .299/.374/.413/.787
  • 165 RBI
  • A 10.7% walk rate and a 13% strike out rate

That translates to a .337 wOBA and 110 wRC+.

In plain language, while no one save perhaps Brian Snitker see Markakis as a cleanup hitter, Markakis came through when it mattered.

That list is as optimistic as the other was pessimistic. Nevertheless, Markakis is far from dead weight and at least two teams seem to need him.
